Big, lavish weddings will always have their place, but right now, there is something incredibly romantic about keeping things intimate. If you are envisioning a celebration with just your closest family and friends, amazing food, and a relaxed atmosphere, a micro-wedding or restaurant reception might be exactly what you need.

As a wedding photographer in Toronto, I’ve had the privilege of capturing celebrations of all sizes. While many couples begin their search by browsing the best wedding venues in Toronto to see the city's grand estates and hotels, there is a unique magic that happens in micro-weddings. If you’ve decided to keep your guest list short, here are my top 7 picks for an intimate wedding in the city.

The Burroughes Building

If you love the trendy, historic vibe of Queen West, The Burroughes Building is an iconic choice. Known for its striking exposed brick, restored wood beams, and rich history as a former department store, this venue brings the ultimate industrial-chic aesthetic. While the main loft can host large parties, it serves as a spectacular blank canvas that can easily be sectioned off for smaller, intimate dining experiences. Plus, their rooftop terrace offers some of the best unobstructed views of the Toronto skyline for a highly memorable micro-ceremony or cocktail hour.

Max Capacity: Up to 250 seated (highly customizable and easily sectioned for intimate groups of 40–80).

Vibe/Style: Industrial loft, brick and beam, urban chic, rooftop views.

Neighborhood: Queen West.

📷 A photographer's perspective: The north-facing skylights flood the loft with soft, even daylight that's incredibly flattering for portraits — and the rooftop's unobstructed sightlines mean golden hour shots with the skyline behind you are almost guaranteed.

Aera Restaurant (The Well)

If you want your guests' jaws to drop the moment they walk in, Aera is the venue. Located on the 38th floor of the office tower at The Well, this Oliver & Bonacini restaurant offers some of the most spectacular, uninterrupted views of the CN Tower and downtown Toronto. Their private dining room, Amelia, is perfect for micro-weddings, or you can do a full buyout for a slightly larger group. It's ultra-modern, luxurious, and features a phenomenal steak and sushi menu.

Max Capacity: 40 seated in the private Amelia Room (up to 115 seated for a full restaurant buyout).

Vibe/Style: Ultra-modern luxury, sky-high elegance, architectural.

Neighborhood: King West / The Well (8 Spadina Ave).

📷 A photographer's perspective: Floor-to-ceiling windows on the 38th floor create a luminous, naturally backlit environment that makes every guest photo look cinematic — just avoid booking a midday ceremony when direct sun hits the glass.

George Restaurant

George Restaurant is legendary in the Toronto wedding scene for a reason. Under the helm of Executive Chef Lorenzo Loseto, the tasting menus here are arguably the best in the city. What makes George so special for weddings, however, is its incredible 19th-century private courtyard. Tucked away from the busy downtown streets, you can host your ceremony outdoors under the wrought-iron details and greenery, and then move inside for a world-class culinary experience.

Max Capacity: Up to 110 seated (can be sectioned off for smaller, highly intimate groups).

Vibe/Style: Historic, romantic, fine-dining, rustic-chic.

Neighborhood: Downtown Core / Queen East.

📷 A photographer's perspective: The courtyard is a photographer's dream — dappled light through the greenery, wrought-iron details as natural framing, and enough separation from the street that you get clean, distraction-free backgrounds.

Oretta

If you want a venue that barely needs any extra decor, Oretta is a designer's dream. Known for its sweeping arches, vibrant jewel tones, and geometric flooring, this King West staple brings mid-century modern Italian glam to your wedding day. For private events, they offer a stunning upstairs space called L'Attico, complete with its own private bar and open-kitchen concept, giving your reception a lively, VIP dinner-party feel.

Max Capacity: Up to 85 seated in the private L'Attico room.

Vibe/Style: Art Deco, chic, vibrant, modern Italian.

Neighborhood: King West.

📷 A photographer's perspective: L'Attico's jewel-toned walls and warm pendant lighting mean the space photographs beautifully even without additional decor — the geometry alone gives every wide shot a strong composition.

Cluny Bistro & Boulangerie

If you want the charm of a historic neighborhood combined with Parisian elegance, Cluny Bistro in the Distillery District is unmatched. Their Private Dining Room is a visual masterpiece, featuring vintage toile-print fabric, rich wood paneling, and stunning antique details. The space feels incredibly romantic and secluded from the main dining room, offering a modern French menu that will have your guests talking for years.

Max Capacity: Up to 64 seated in the Private Dining Room (can be divided with a hidden wall for micro-weddings of 24 to 40 guests).

Vibe/Style: Neo-Parisian, vintage, vibrant, elegant.

Neighborhood: The Distillery District.

📷 A photographer's perspective: The toile-print walls and warm wood paneling create a rich, layered backdrop that works especially well for detail shots — rings, florals, and tablescapes all photograph like editorial spreads in here.

Balzac's Coffee Roasters

For a truly unique, non-traditional micro-wedding, Balzac's in the Distillery District is a showstopper. Set inside an 1895 pump house, it feels like a Parisian grand café mixed with a historic industrial loft. The centerpiece is a massive, spectacular chandelier hanging from the two-story ceiling. It is warm, incredibly photogenic, and allows you to bring in outside caterers, giving you a lot of flexibility for your food and beverage.

Max Capacity: Up to 50 seated (or up to 100 for a standing cocktail-style reception).

Vibe/Style: Parisian café, industrial, historic, cozy.

Neighborhood: The Distillery District.

📷 A photographer's perspective: That chandelier is the hero shot. Position the couple beneath it during the first dance or cake cutting and you'll have one of the most dramatic reception images of your career.

The Broadview Hotel

The Broadview Hotel is an East End landmark that offers an incredible boutique hotel experience. While their Lincoln Hall can hold larger groups, they have arguably the best ultra-intimate space in the city: The Tower. Located on the 7th floor, this stunning room features warm wood tones, a vaulted ceiling, and historic arched windows perfectly suited for a private, candlelit dinner. Alternatively, their Rooftop offers panoramic views of the Toronto skyline for slightly larger, cocktail-style celebrations.

Max Capacity: 20 seated in The Tower (ultra-micro); up to 100 seated on the Rooftop.

Vibe/Style: Boutique historic, urban luxury, skyline views.

Neighbourhood: Riverside / East End.

📷 A photographer's perspective: The Tower's arched windows create gorgeous leading lines and frame natural light beautifully for intimate portrait sessions — ask the venue to keep the overhead lights dim and let the window light do the work.
