Photo Stuff to Keep in Mind When Marrying at U of T

Taking wedding photos at the University of Toronto is not the same as shooting at other wedding venues. The campus is busy, big, and has a lot of buildings — which is cool, but couples should plan for it.

Lighting All Over Campus

Many spots have tall stone walls, small windows, and both natural and artificial light. Good Toronto wedding photographers know how to adjust to keep the vibe without making it too bright.

Don’t Forget the Paperwork: U of T Photo Permits

One thing you can’t skip when planning a University of Toronto wedding is the permit. Because it’s a working campus and a very popular spot for films and photoshoots, U of T is strict about professional photography.

  • If you’re getting married on-site:  Usually, venues like Hart House or Knox College include a photography permit as part of your booking package. However, always double-check if that permit covers the entire campus or just that specific building.

  • If you’re only visiting for photos:  If your ceremony is elsewhere but you want those iconic stone backdrops, you’ll need to apply for a permit through the U of T Campus Events office.

  • The Alumni Perk:  Good news for former students—U of T often offers a discount on wedding photo permits for alumni. It’s a nice way to save a bit of your budget for the reception!

Pro Tip: I always recommend booking your permit as early as possible. Popular spots like the Knox College hallways fill up fast, especially on Saturdays in the summer. Having your permit printed and ready on the day of ensures we don’t get interrupted during your session.

Navigating the Campus: Crowds, Energy, and Creative Timing

A couple in formal attire runs joyfully across a snowy field in front of a grand building with a domed roof.

U of T is a working campus, so people are always walking around. It’s best to time photo sessions carefully. Some areas look better when it's quieter.

Weather & Backup Plans

Outdoor courtyards and walkways are a big part of the U of T experience, but Toronto weather can be a pain. Have backup plans for indoor photos, covered walkways, and winter weddings.
