Aga Khan Museum Wedding Photography

The Aga Khan Museum is one of the most architecturally precise wedding venues in Toronto — Fumihiko Maki's white granite geometry and exterior reflecting pools create a symmetrical, modernist backdrop with no equivalent elsewhere in the city. The pools photograph with exceptional depth on clear days, and the museum's clean interior lines respond beautifully to off-camera flash. Below is my photographer's guide to working this North York landmark.

A World-Class Museum of Islamic Art in North York

A wedding at the Aga Khan Museum offers a masterclass in modern architecture and serene design. Defined by luminous honey-onyx walls and geometric light screens, the museum provides a backdrop of clean lines and open spaces. It is a world-class destination for sophisticated bridal portraits and a wedding gallery that feels both culturally significant and visually breathtaking.

The Reflecting Pools: Geometric Balance

The museum’s exterior is centered around five granite reflecting pools that offer a sense of calm and symmetry. The white granite walls act as massive light reflectors, providing a soft, glowing environment for your portraits. The result is a series of images that feel sculptural and balanced.

The Onyx Room: Luminous Interior Atmosphere

Inside, the atrium and honey-onyx walls create a warm, diffused light that is unique to this landmark. Even on overcast days, the interior provides a golden, high-end atmosphere for your ceremony. It is a space designed for grand scale and visual breathtaking beauty.

A Photographer’s Timeline for Aga Khan Museum

Choosing the Aga Khan Museum is a statement of modernist precision and artistic appreciation. Your gallery will be defined by the white granite facade, serene reflecting pools, and a clean, architectural approach that a wedding photographer in Toronto uses to create timeless, editorial-style imagery.

11:00 AM – Your Morning Begins (Delta Hotels by Marriott Toronto East)

Your wedding day starts just a few minutes away in a luxury suite at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Toronto East. By choosing this location, you ensure your morning prep is calm and spacious. You’ll enjoy the abundant window light that pours into the suites, which is essential for those clean, editorial-style photos of your finishing touches. Whether you are stepping into your attire or sharing a quiet moment with your wedding party, the neutral, bright environment of the hotel keeps the focus entirely on the emotion of the morning.

1:00 PM – The First Look (The Marriott Atrium or Grand Staircase)

Before heading to the museum, you’ll share a private First Look right at the Marriott. Whether you choose the sun-drenched atrium or the grand staircase, this moment belongs entirely to you. Having this reveal at the hotel allows you to get those nervous jitters out of the way in a sophisticated setting, ensuring that once you arrive at the Aga Khan Museum, you are ready to step directly into your portrait session with total confidence.

2:00 PM – Your Wedding Party Experience (The Aga Khan Park)

As you arrive at the Aga Khan Park, your wedding party will be greeted by the breathtaking scale of the five granite reflecting pools. You’ll move through the manicured gardens together, where the white stone acts as a natural reflector, giving everyone’s skin a soft, glowing finish. It’s an expansive space that allows your group to feel relaxed and unconfined, resulting in "Vogue-style" group portraits that feel effortless and high-end.

3:30 PM – Cinematic Couple’s Portraits (The Architectural Facade)

This is the moment where you become the art. You’ll walk alongside the museum’s geometric exterior, designed by the legendary Fumihiko Maki, while we utilize the sharp lines and shifting shadows to create your signature portraits. You’ll see yourselves reflected in the still waters of the pools, creating a sense of symmetry and peace. Because the granite surfaces are so bright, you’ll look radiant even if the day is slightly overcast, resulting in a gallery of timeless, sculptural images.

4:30 PM – An Intimate Ceremony (The Bellerive Room)

Your ceremony will take place in the Bellerive Room, a Persian-style salon that offers a warm, cultured contrast to the museum’s minimalist exterior. You’ll exchange vows surrounded by world-class Islamic art and ceramics, creating a sophisticated atmosphere that feels like a private sanctuary. The soft, focused lighting in this room ensures that the focus remains on your expressions and the intimacy of your promises.

5:30 PM – Cocktails in the Courtyard

While your guests transition to the Courtyard for cocktails, you’ll have a few moments to breathe and enjoy the open-air beauty of the museum’s center. Surrounded by glass walls etched with geometric patterns, you’ll feel like you’re in a private piazza. The late afternoon sun creates beautiful, intricate shadows on the lapis and granite floors around you—a perfect, quiet moment to soak in your first hour as a married couple.

7:00 PM – A Grand Reception (Diwan or The Atrium)

Whether you choose the panoramic views of Diwan or the soaring ceilings of the Atrium, your reception will feel like an extension of the museum's luxury. As the sun sets and the architectural lighting begins to glow, the space transforms into a vibrant, high-energy celebration. You’ll be framed by the grand scale of the interior architecture during your first dance, giving your reception photos a sense of majesty that few other Toronto venues can match.

10:00 PM – Your Night Finale (The Reflecting Pools at Dusk)

To close your story, you’ll step back outside for one last five-minute session. The Aga Khan Museum at night is a masterpiece; the reflecting pools turn into dark mirrors that catch the glow of the illuminated white granite. Standing together under the dark Toronto sky, you’ll have one final, dramatic portrait that serves as the perfect, quiet conclusion to your architectural wedding journey.

Photography Guide: Aga Khan Museum Wedding FAQ

How much does a photography permit cost at the Aga Khan Museum?

For non-wedding clients, photography permits are required for the park and grounds. The fee is $325 on weekdays and $425 on weekends (HST exempt) for a 90-minute session. Note that indoor museum photography is generally restricted to couples who have booked their full wedding at the venue.

What is the capacity of the Aga Khan Museum for weddings?

The venue offers multiple spaces with varying capacities. The Atrium can host up to 400 guests for a cocktail reception. For seated dinners, the glass-enclosed Courtyard seats 225 guests, while the Diwan Restaurant seats roughly 85–120 guests. The outdoor Diwan Terrace can accommodate larger groups (up to 350) but requires a tent rental.

Who provides the catering at the Aga Khan Museum?

All catering is provided exclusively in-house by The McEwan Group (led by celebrity Chef Mark McEwan). They offer premium, customizable menus ranging from roughly $150 to $350 per person. Outside catering is generally not permitted unless you have specific religious dietary needs that their kitchen cannot accommodate.

What happens if it rains during a Diwan Terrace wedding?

If you book the outdoor Diwan Terrace, a professional tent is mandatory for larger events to ensure weather protection. The tenting package is a significant additional cost (often starting around $25,000 for draping, lighting, and setup). For smaller events, the indoor Atrium or Diwan Restaurant may serve as backups.

Is alcohol allowed at the Aga Khan Museum?

Yes. While it is a museum of Islamic art and culture, it is a fully licensed venue. The McEwan Group provides full bar services for weddings and corporate events. However, alcohol service must be managed by their staff in accordance with Ontario liquor laws.
