How I Photograph Weddings at Steam Whistle Brewing
Exposed brick, massive timber beams, and the venue’s heritage industrial character create a bold, distinctly urban setting for wedding photography. As a Toronto-based wedding photographer, I use its gritty textures and directional light to create atmospheric images with a modern editorial feel.
1. The Roundhouse Windows – Sculpting Industrial Light
The massive windows offer incredible but highly directional light. I pose couples parallel to the glass to sculpt their faces with deep, dramatic shadows that match the gritty vibe.
2. The Brick Pillars – Softening the Background
The heavy brickwork can easily clutter the background of a portrait. I use an 85mm lens at f/1.2 to melt the brick into a soft, warm wash of color, keeping the focus entirely on the couple.
3. The City View Patio – Dragging the Shutter
The mixed lighting at night from streetlamps and the CN Tower is challenging. I drag the shutter slightly to capture the glowing city lights while freezing the couple perfectly with a quick burst of flash.
