Steam Whistle Brewing Wedding Photography

Steam Whistle's historic Roundhouse sits directly under the CN Tower, which means your reception backdrop includes one of the most recognizable skylines in the world — if you know how to use it. The raw brick interior photographs beautifully under available light, and the outdoor terrace at blue hour creates a city-editorial frame that no suburban venue can replicate. Below is my photographer's guide to working this iconic industrial Toronto space.

THE INDUSTRIAL FLOW

A Photographer’s Timeline for Steam Whistle Brewery

Choosing Steam Whistle Brewery is a statement of industrial-chic energy and the historic spirit of the John Street Roundhouse..

11:30 AM – Getting Ready (Delta Hotels by Marriott Toronto)

When shooting at Steam Whistle, keeping logistics tight is key, which is why I always recommend getting ready right across the street at the Delta Hotel.

Pro Tip for the Absolute "GOAT" Shots: When booking your room at the Delta, specifically request one of their corner suites with the skyline-view bathrooms. The floor-to-ceiling windows right by the soaking tub give you unparalleled, high-angle aerial views looking directly down onto the Roundhouse, the trains, and the CN Tower. Capturing your morning prep and dress shots with your actual wedding venue sprawling out in the background below is an absolute flex and sets the tone for the entire day.

1:30 PM – The First Look (Roundhouse Park)

Since we are already right across the street, we can utilize Roundhouse Park for an incredibly dramatic First Look. Having the two of you see each other for the first time surrounded by the historic railway museum, with the monumental CN Tower piercing the sky directly overhead, gives this moment a massive, architectural scale.

2:30 PM – Wedding Party Portraits (The Locomotives & Exposed Brick)

Before the crowds arrive, we take the wedding party on a walk around the perimeter of the building. The massive, restored vintage trains and the heavily textured, historic brick walls of the brewery provide a flawlessly cool, industrial-chic backdrop for your group shots. The surrounding skyscrapers act as massive reflectors, bouncing clean, diffused light down into the park even in the middle of the afternoon.

4:00 PM – The Ceremony (Front Terrace by the Barn Doors)

For the ceremony, the front terrace is an absolute showstopper. Exchanging your vows right in front of the brewery's massive, iconic green wooden barn doors creates a beautifully textured, rustic-industrial frame. The doors provide an anchor to the space, ensuring the focus stays entirely on the two of you, while the open-air terrace gives your guests an unmistakable downtown Toronto experience.

5:00 PM – Golden Hour Portraits (The Cityscape & Bremner Blvd)

While your guests head inside to grab their first fresh pilsner of the evening, we take a few minutes for golden hour portraits. The late afternoon sun behaves incredibly well in this pocket of the city. As it drops behind the downtown high-rises, it creates dramatic, glowing flares that bounce off the glass skyscrapers and warm up the historic brick of the Roundhouse, giving your couple's session a beautiful, glowing, metropolitan romance.

6:30 PM – The Reception (The Main Hall)

As you make your grand entrance into the Main Hall, the architecture does all the heavy lifting. With its 30-foot high multi-paned windows, massive Douglas Fir wooden beams, and towering exposed brick walls, the space is undeniably grand. As the sun fully sets and the city lights turn on outside, the massive windows turn into living artwork showcasing the illuminated downtown skyline. Paired with the warm string lights or chandeliers inside, the room transforms into an incredibly photogenic, high-energy party space for the rest of the night.

10:00 PM – Night Portraits (The Vintage Trains & City Bokeh)

Before I pack up my gear, I always sneak my couples outside for five minutes for one last epic setup. Roundhouse Park at night is a completely different world. We pose you right next to the massive vintage locomotives, and by bringing out a perfectly placed off-camera flash, I can light the two of you beautifully against the dark, heavy industrial trains. At the same time, shooting with a wide-open aperture lets the glittering skyscrapers and the illuminated CN Tower in the background blur into stunning, cinematic city-light bokeh. It creates a deeply dramatic, high-end, editorial finish to close out your wedding story.
